Freediving in Pakistan with Waqar Khan

Pakistan Spearfishing teaches freediving in the sea with Waqar Khan. Courses run on the Karachi coast for a first descent and for divers who already know the basics.

Written by Waqar Khan, founder of Pakistan Spearfishing.

What is freediving?

Freediving is breath-hold diving. You swim down and back on one breath, without a tank. On this coast that means open Arabian Sea water, a buddy on the surface, and a depth that matches the person in the water.

What the training covers

Beginners start with breathing, relaxation, equalisation and a duck dive, then a supervised descent. Later work covers fin technique, a calmer breath-hold, streamlining and a personal depth plan. Competition preparation is for constant weight, bifins or free immersion, the disciplines Waqar competes in.

Private coaching is one goal in one session. Group days are arranged when you send the group size and the mix of experience. Visiting students use the same progression, described on the international students page.

Where you train

Home water is the Arabian Sea at Clifton, Churna Island, Mubarak Village and Cape Monze. The October to April season is the easier window. Water on this coast is about 22 to 30°C. Visibility and the day’s depth are not published as a single number.

Read the coast spots or go straight to a course.

Safety

Freediving has a real blackout risk. Pakistan Spearfishing does not teach people to dive alone. A buddy watches the surface, equalisation stays comfortable, and a dive is called off when the sea or the diver is not ready. Students are not chased toward the instructor’s 40 m mark.

International students

The same courses are open to visitors. Arrival, stay length and a private block are discussed on the international students page. Fees are confirmed on WhatsApp before you pay.

Questions

Where can I learn freediving in Pakistan?
With Waqar Khan on the Karachi coast: Clifton, Churna Island, Mubarak Village and Cape Monze.
Can a beginner start?
Yes. Tell him your swimming experience. The first session is set to match it, usually relaxation and a short supervised descent.
What is the best season?
The published window for this coast is October to April, with water about 22 to 30°C. The actual day still depends on the sea.
How deep will I go?
There is no published student depth. Waqar keeps the dive inside your experience. His own maximum on the site is 40 m, which is not a course target.
